Quaser hat trick at 2G Tooling
Being virtual neighbours in Southam, Warwickshire, the Engineering Technology Group and 2G Tooling Ltd have recently completed the installation of a third large capacity Quaser VMC as 2G’s press tool design and manufacturing business continues to thrive.
Specialising in automotive ‘body and white’ press tools and fixtures, 2G has an impressive manufacturing capability based around three Quaser vertical machining centres including the UK’s largest capacity Quaser – a MV234P VMC – which has an impressive machining envelope of 2000 x 762mm.

“We have a lot of experience in this sector and from the outset were determined not to fall short in terms of machining capacity,” explains partner Chris Peters who with his brother established the company in January 2015.
“Since start-up we have built the business up and have now employed an additional toolmaker and apprentice as well as investing in another Quaser.
“The two original Quaser’s – an MV234 and MV184 – have been fantastic.  I had not heard of them before we spoke to ETG, but they are extremely well built and have many features that on others are extra’s.
“So when we landed a large order with short lead time we had an immediate need for additional capacity and the new Quaser214 fitted the bill perfectly,” he adds.

The new machine is equipped with the latest Heidenhain ITNC530 control and with its purchase 2G has added considerable capacity and capability to its highly specialist manufacturing resources.

“Mostly we machine in tool steels such as Uddeholm Holdax and SV21 with some machined parts specified in aluminium,” Chris explains. “We also do a fair amount of prototyping offering customers a full CAD to machining service using VISI Series design and machining software.  These days pre-build tools have to produce parts to meet similar standards to the final production parts so we value the accuracy and repeatability that the VMC’s offer us,” he adds.

Working in tandem with its ‘big brother’, the MV214 makes use of Quaser’s unique spindle technology and grease replenishment system while offering coolant and chip management alongside machine thermal management.
Chris Peters is confident that 2G Tooling is starting to fill a niche in an industry that has largely moved overseas.

“We can be highly flexible and work very closely with our customers – to the point that they are often here to watch and contribute to prototyping,” he explains.
“The fact we have invested in further machining capacity and have the capability to machine over 2 metres demonstrates we mean business and that customers know they have a reliable UK based resource almost on their doorstep.”
